THE ONE THING
The market is not signaling panic, but it is signaling selectivity. The S&P 500 is near its recent high while the Russell 2000 and high-yield ETF are softer, and gold is firm; that is a leadership split, not broad risk appetite. Advisors should resist calling this a clean risk-on tape: the useful client question is whether participation broadens beyond large-cap growth or the index keeps rising on narrower leadership.

NEXT BIG NUMBER
Friday’s University of Michigan final consumer sentiment release is the week’s cleanest test of whether inflation anxiety is becoming a household constraint. The preliminary index fell 7.5% from August to 47.8, while year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.6%; a final reading that holds near 47.8 or pushes expectations above 4.6% would keep the inflation-growth tradeoff in focus, while a meaningful reversal would reduce that pressure.
ADVISOR TIP OF THE DAY
Ask clients whether their confidence in the economy and their willingness to take risk are moving together. If the answer is no, that gap is more useful than a generic risk-on or risk-off label.
